How did you home stand up to the recent winter storms?

July was a cracker of a month for storms in Perth and the south-west! Perth has recorded its wettest July since 2000 and had days of wild winds from 70-120km per hour lashing our homes. And now that the sun is peeking out, we get to assess the damage.

Thousands of Perth homes were damaged in storms this winter, with everything from roofs being lost to ceilings collapsing to fences blowing down. Homeowners are beginning the task of cleaning up and rebuilding and are looking for their best options as they fix storm damage.

GND Property Maintenance Group have been busy in recent weeks cleaning up damaged homes after wild winter storms, and we have some tips for you to consider if you are rebuilding after the storm season.

Strong Pergolas

If your pergola has been damaged in the wind and you are looking at rebuilding, take the time to consider different materials for your next pergola.

Timber pergolas have the advantage of being a natural product with a natural look, feel and texture. However, they require regular maintenance and upkeep, and while they initially look great, may weather over time.

Metal or colorbond pergolas won’t rust, are strong enough to be designed to cover a wide area without requiring structural supports and can come in kit form for quick and easy construction. Aluminium pergolas are lightweight and strong, and won’t rust.

All these material choices will look good and improve the aesthetic of your home, but if you do live in an area that is prone to bad weather, maybe consider a strong steel pergola that will last for years.

Modular Walls

Boundary fences and walls have been known to come down in storms, and when replacing them, consider installing modular walls.

Modular walls are the modern-day alternative to brick and mortar. They have a sleek design that compliments any home. The modular fence “bricks” are made with fibre cement outer skins laminated to a lightweight polystyrene core. This makes them super strong as well as being easy to build. Best of all, the lifetime of a modular wall is at least 25 years, so you can rest easy knowing that once it’s built, you won’t have to do anything again for a while!

Fences and Pool fencing

After a storm, insurance companies are bombarded with calls about fences that have blown down in the wind. And if a pool fence has come down, you’ll need to act quick to repair it for safety and compliance.

When choosing your new fence or pool fencing materials, GND Property Maintenance Group has two suggestions – aluminium and steel.

Aluminium pool fencing is the strongest choice and the easiest to source. Aluminium pool fencing can be custom made to different designs and styles, and then powder coated with a range of colours. We suggest black to keep it simple, and of course pool fencing must meet requirements of being at least 1200mm high.

For boundary fences, colorbond is always a great option. Time to update the old Hardie Fence that has finally given up and fallen over! Colorbond is made from steel, meaning it’s extremely strong and long-lasting. The range of colours will suit any home, and colorbond fences can be built in all different heights for extra privacy.
