Tips to keep your home cool this summer

Last summer in Perth was hotter than average, and it’s likely that we are facing a long, hot West Coast summer again this year.

For some people, summer in Perth can be the worst months of the year! Getting home from work at the end of the day to a hot and stuffy house that’s been baked by the sun all day. Not being able to sleep at night because still, hot air in a house with no air con. Wanting to use the backyard for entertaining but having no real shade or shelter from the sun.

Let’s face it, our summers will always be HOT and we need ways to keep cool. Here’s some tips on keeping your house cool this summer.

Air-con all the way!

If your home does not have air-conditioning, now is the time to invest in a system. From as little as $500, you can have a small split system installed in a bedroom to make sleeping easier on those hot nights. Many companies offer finance and options to pay it off to make it easier to get your air-con now.

Cover yourself!

Having suitable blinds on your windows will reduce the amount of heat coming into your home, as well as helping to keep cooled air inside. There are many styles of blinds available, and as well as helping keep your home cool, they are a stylish addition to a room.

In addition to blinds or block-out curtains, another effective window covering is roller shutters. Made from aluminium that is injected with high density polyurethane foam, roller shutters create a strong barrier from outdoor heat. Roller shutters also serve as added security for your home – once they down, nobody is breaking into the home through the window!

Block the heat

If you can stop the heat getting into your home, the battle is half won! Consider ways to shade your windows using external coverings, awnings, or large plants. Plant deciduous trees that cast shade over your home in summer, but still let the sun in during winter. Also consider investing in window tinting as another way to keep the heat out.

Adjust your ceiling fans

Some people choose to use ceiling fans in addition to using air-con indoors. This can be very effective as the fans help to circulate the cool air. If you are using ceiling fans, a tip is to set them to rotate anti-clockwise in summer to push air straight down, helping to create a cooling effect. Then change over and have them rotating clockwise in winter to pull cool air up. This one trick can help cool the room and may even mean you don’t need your air-conditioner on all the time.

Seal gaps

It’s amazing how much hot air comes in, and how much cool air escapes outside through gaps around windows and doors. Before summer gets here, go around your house and seal gaps around doors and windows, and use draught excluders to ensure the cool air can’t escape.
